HVAC equipment labels use standardized ratings to help compare energy performance. Those ratings are useful, but they do not guarantee a specific utility bill or comfort result.
SEER2: cooling efficiency
SEER2 is a seasonal measure used for cooling equipment. A higher rating indicates greater tested seasonal cooling efficiency under standardized conditions.
HSPF2: heat-pump heating efficiency
HSPF2 describes seasonal heating performance for heat pumps. It is useful for comparing equipment, but climate and operating conditions affect real-world results.
AFUE: fuel-burning heating efficiency
AFUE is used for furnaces and boilers. It represents the portion of fuel energy converted into usable heat over a typical operating cycle under test conditions.
Why the rating is not the whole story
Real-world HVAC performance also depends on equipment sizing, duct leakage, airflow, thermostat strategy, building insulation, air sealing, weather and installation quality. An efficient piece of equipment connected to a poor duct system can still deliver disappointing results.
How to compare systems intelligently
Compare efficiency together with installed cost, expected runtime, climate, fuel and electric rates, comfort features, maintenance needs and how long you expect to own the property.
