A furnace creates heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance. A heat pump moves heat using a refrigeration cycle and can reverse that cycle to provide air conditioning in summer.
Why heat pumps get attention
Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate it directly, they can provide efficient heating under many conditions. Modern cold-climate equipment has also expanded the range of temperatures where heat pumps can operate effectively.
Where furnaces still fit
Furnaces remain common in buildings with existing gas infrastructure and can deliver high-temperature supply air. The economics depend on equipment efficiency, fuel prices, electricity prices and the condition of the existing system.
What is dual fuel?
A dual-fuel system combines a heat pump with a furnace. Controls can switch between the two heat sources based on outdoor conditions, system settings or economic preferences.
Do not ignore the duct system
Changing the heat source does not fix undersized returns, major duct leakage or poor room-to-room airflow. Before replacing equipment, evaluate whether the distribution system can support the new design.
